Manchester United started the new Premier League with 5-1 statement win over fierce rivals Leeds, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick and Paul Pogba getting four assists.

The vibrant hosts were on the front foot from the early exchanges, although Leeds largely held their own in the first half and did create some openings of their own before Fernandes' opener.

Luke Ayling even scored a stunning equaliser early in the second half, but it wasn’t long after that when Fernandes and Pogba turned the heat up, with Mason Greenwood and Fred also getting on the score-sheet.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be pleased with how his team performed, while Marcelo Bielsa will be left to pick Leeds up before their next game.

Here’s a look at how both sets of players fared…

Manchester United

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

David de Gea (GK) 6/10: Beaten out of the blue and otherwise largely a spectator.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB) 6/10: Didn’t offer too much in the way of going forward, not that it really mattered for the result, but his defensive work was largely solid.

Victor Lindelof (CB) 7/10: Picked out a superb pass to create United’s fourth goal and defended well.

Harry Maguire (CB) 7/10: Led at the back and always kept Leeds’ threat under control.

Luke Shaw (LB) 7/10: Dealt well with Raphinha in the first half in particular before his team ran away with the result. Also managed to get forward on occasion.

2. Midfielders

Scott McTominay (CM) 7/10: Dictated play in midfield well, which was all the more impressive when he is understood not to be match fit after a stop-start pre-season.

Fred (CM) 7/10: Covered plenty of distance in the middle of the park and was rewarded for his efforts with a rare goal.

Bruno Fernandes (AM) 10/10: A hat-trick in the first game of the season is the stuff of dreams, particularly as he stuck it to his critics by scoring all three from open play.

3. Forwards

Paul Pogba

Daniel James (RW) 5/10: Lacked the quality and incisive decision-making when it mattered most to have a real impact. Worked hard.

Mason Greenwood (ST) 8/10: Trusted to start in the number nine role and repaid that faith with a superb finish to restore his team’s lead after Leeds equalised.

Paul Pogba (LW) 10/10: Missed a glorious early chance to score himself but more than made up for that with exceptional vision to rack up four assists.

4. Substitutes

Jadon Sancho

Nemanja Matic (CM) 6/10: A like for like replacement for McTominay for the final 20 minutes.

Jadon Sancho (LW) 6/10: Given a rapturous reception on his Premier League debut. No pressure to make an impact with the game won but he looked keen to do something.

Anthony Martial (ST) 6/10: Perhaps surprised he didn’t start but did well off the bench.

5. Goalkeeper & defenders

Ilan Meslier (GK) 6/10: Made some good early saves and it was only power that beat him for the opener. Stood little chance for the others that followed.

Luke Ayling (RB) 6/10: His equaliser was a stunner from outside the penalty area after running forward unchecked into space.

Pascal Struijk (CB) 5/10: Struggled to contend with the movement of Greenwood and others.

Liam Cooper (CB) 5/10: A very difficult afternoon against an opposition in good form.

Stuart Dallas (LB) 6/10: Moved into midfield in the second half after a tactical reshuffle.

6. Midfielders

Robin Koch (DM) 4/10: Lost the run of Fernandes more than once, proving costly.

Rodrigo (CM) 4/10: Disappointing in the opening 45 minutes during which he struggled to get involved and was withdrawn at the break.

Mateusz Klich (CM) 5/10: Enjoyed a good first half and forced a good save from De Gea. Got swamped after the break.

7. Forwards

Raphinha; Harry Maguire

Raphinha (RW) 6/10: Leeds’ biggest threat and source of creativity in the first half, although as the score-line grew his afternoon became a frustrated one.

Patrick Bamford (ST) 5/10: Pressed well from the front but didn’t always have enough support.

Jack Harrison (LW) 6/10: Looked dangerous when he had the chance to run with the ball in the first half but that quickly dried up once the goals started going in at the other end.

8. Substitutes

Junior Firpo; Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Junior Firpo (LB) 5/10: A half-time arrival for his Premier League debut and a baptism of fire.

Helder Costa (LW) 5/10: The game was long gone when he replaced Harrison.

Tyler Roberts (ST) 6/10: Did create one great chance for Leeds to get another consolation.
