It can often feel as though Manchester City are gliding through a season, dispatching teams at will and only very occasionally being seriously tested.

The treble winners' start to the 2023/24 campaign has been pretty smooth even with Pep Guardiola's partial absence due to back surgery. The Catalan coach returned to the bench on Saturday, inspiring his side to a second-half comeback against a previously unbeaten West Ham United team.

City are the favourites in every game they play, but there are some tough tests on the horizon for Guardiola's faultless champions.

It is a bit of a running joke that Manchester City always seem to get very favourable Champions League group stage draws. With RB Leipzig, Crvena zvezda and Young Boys, this season is not exactly bucking the trend.

They can only play what they're given, though, and this is the sort of match that you would expect them to enjoy at the Etihad. Erling Haaland will know that there is a great chance to jump ahead in the scoring charts early on here.

Man City vs Nottingham Forest - Premier League

Nottingham Forest have already shown this season that they are no pushovers and they will be making some big teams work extremely hard to get three points. If there is any team that would be able to make light work of them, though, it is Manchester City.

Smaller sides go to the Etihad with one main objective; to avoid an embarrassing beating. That will be the primary aim for Steve Cooper, but he will also feel that he has got players that can hurt Man City on the break. It's all about being clinical.

Newcastle vs Man City - Carabao Cup

It was one of the big shocks of the season in 2022/23 when Nathan Jones' Southampton managed to knock City out of the Carabao Cup, removing the possibility of an unprecedented quadruple.

Considering they did the treble, Guardiola is going to be taking this competition seriously - as he always has during his time in England. However, City's quest begins with a tricky away trip against Newcastle United. As finalists last year, the Magpies are on their own Carabao Cup mission.

Wolves vs Man City - Premier League

Wolves have shown on a couple of occasions, mainly against Manchester United and Liverpool, that they do have a game plan which can frustrate some of the better teams in the Premier League, albeit without winning. They have also caused City a few problems in the recent past.

Guardiola's side will naturally come into the game as the favourites - as they do every week - but they will know that a professional job is likely to be needed if they are to get all three points from their trip to the West Midlands.

RB Leipzig vs Man City - Champions League

This will be the hardest game of the Champions League group stage for City and they are getting it out of the way early. RB Leipzig have made a commanding start to the new Bundesliga season, racking up nine points and 13 goals from their first four games.

Marco Rose's side are not as good as Man City, but he has plenty of players that can hurt anyone. Unlike many of City's opponents, the likes of Dani Olmo, Lois Openda and Xavi Simons will be playing to win the game, not just frustrate and grab a point.

Arsenal vs Man City - Premier League

The two sides that battled it out for the title last season, this is one of the hardest games of the Premier League season for Man City but as we keep saying, they will feel confident of a result regardless.

Arsenal look as though they should be just as good, if not better than last season, so City just need to do the same and they should have the edge once again. Guardiola did the league double over his former assistant Mikel Arteta last time and knocked him out of the FA Cup. However, Arsenal earned a modicum of revenge with a win in the Community Shield on penalties in August.
