Livingston Jokingly Decide Future of Goalkeeper Gary Maley With Unprecedented Twitter Poll
The future of Livingston goalkeeper Gary Maley is at the mercy of social media after the club posted a Twitter poll on whether he should be given a new contract.
In what's a nerve wracking time of year for players out of contract in the summer, many up and down the country will be on standby for a dreaded Zoom chat or phone call with the manager regarding their future.
Scottish Premiership outfit, Livingston, meanwhile, have taken the power completely out of their hands when it comes to determining the destiny of Maley, with anyone who stumbles across the poll on Twitter granted free rein to cast a vote.
The Scottish outfit wrote on their official Twitter page: "With his contract expiring next month, we’re leaving it in the hands of the fans as to whether or not we offer 'Stretch' an extension.
"Stay or go - you decide!"
While the poll offered a great chance for thousands to deny Maley a new deal 'for the bantz', it appears that morality has prevailed with more than 68% of voters up until this point encouraging Livingston to offer the 37-year-old a new contract.
Over 167,000 votes have been cast thus far, with the poll not expiring until Wednesday evening.
Third-choice shot-stopper Maley is the club's only part-time player and has previously received praise from manager Gary Holt.
"Big Stretch has been great for us with helping the boys out with different movements and where to finish and stuff like that during training," Holt said in December, speaking to the Daily Record.
“I have to give the big man some plaudits. He does get a lot of stick but there’s nothing happier sometimes than when you see people sitting in the stand smiling who have played their part," he added.
While it's unlikely the poll will actually determine Maley's future, this didn't stop several teammates and staff members from chipping in a few digs.
Midfielder Marvin Bartley said: "100 per cent he goes, can’t push forward as a club with ‘players’ like him! Bye big man, look after yourself."
Assistant manager David Martindale, meanwhile, joked: "It’s time to hang your gloves up big fella, you had a good run at it."
