Liverpool are considering their options over midfielder Thiago Alcantara, sources have confirmed to 90min.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has always publicly backed Thiago, who arrived at Anfield to much fanfare when he joined from Bayern Munich in 2020.

However, Thiago's time at Liverpool has become increasingly beset with injuries and last season he started just 14 league games.

Indeed, Thiago is yet to feature this season as he seeks to recover from a hip injury suffered back in April, and this summer the club's resolve over the Spaniard was tested as interest emerged from Turkey and the Saudi Pro League.

90min understands Thiago made it clear to Liverpool he did not want to leave as he looked to re-establish himself in a new-look midfield but, as it stands, that has not been possible due to his current injury status.

The 32-year-old's contract expires next summer and conversations have taken place about his future.

Klopp is one of those who wants to see Thiago handed an extension, but 90min understands there are others at Anfield who are not convinced the Spaniard warrants another contract.

"You don't have five million players like this on the planet - only a few who see things earlier than anyone else and have the technical ability to not only see it but get the ball there as well," Klopp said of Thiago in the summer.

"He is a world-class player. He can be pretty dangerous with and without the ball so, from our point of view, there is really nothing to moan about. Football is outstanding, but his counter-pressing was mad. That makes the full package. I couldn't respect it more."

Thiago has been one of Liverpool's highest earners throughout his stay at the club but Anfield officials are not wholly convinced they have seen a worthwhile return on what has been a substantial outlay.

It is understood the club will talk with Thiago and his representatives before January to assess the situation but, with interest in his services from both Saudi Arabia and Europe, a move in the January window - potentially Liverpool's last chance to sell before losing him for free - remains a distinct possibility.
