Lisandro Martinez says he is pleased with his start to life at Manchester United and wants to emulate his compatriot Gabriel Heinze's success at the club.

A £57m summer signing from Ajax, Martinez endured his fair share of criticism after the club's rocky start to the season, with some fans and pundits even questioning his suitability to the Premier League.

However, the 24-year-old has silenced critics with a series of improved performances, the latest coming in United's impressive 2-0 win over Spurs on Wednesday. The game ended with fans chanting 'Argentina' in tribute to the impressive centre-back.

"We did a great job. We controlled the game, the whole 90 minutes," Martinez told Sky Sports. "I think they had only one chance in the first half and then we were solid in defence. I am really happy because we tried really hard to play at this level. We want to play this way. It is fantastic to do it."

Martinez's performances have drawn comparisons to former United defender Heinze, who won the club's player of the year award back in 2005. Martinez approves of these comparisons and admits he seeks to emulate Heinze in every way possible.

"Gabriel Heinze is my idol. I love him," Martinez admitted. "I love the way he played, very aggressive, good mentality, good mentality in the duels. Every game as a final. He was a top player.

"I try to play like him. We are a bit different as well, but I like his mentality."

United take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, looking for a win which would lift them into the Premier League's top four at the expense of Graham Potter's side.
