Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted he was shocked by Mohamed Salah's injury at the Africa Cup of Nations.

31-year-old Salah pulled up just before half-time during Egypt's 2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday after attempting a sprint. Liverpool's top scorer this season was able to walk off the field unaided but was clearly in discomfort as he clutched his hamstring.

Tests will now be run to determine the extent of Salah's issue, with Klopp telling his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's Premier League game at Bournemouth that he's waiting for more information.

He said: "We don't know anything. I spoke last night with him and how it is with these injuries, you need further assessment. That's what they are doing now and then we will know more."

The German then revealed his initial reaction to Salah going down, continuing: "Of course, it was in that moment a shock: 'Oh my God, what is it?'

"You couldn't see that it was like [being] hit by something with high-intensity, you couldn't see [that] and then going down, you have these kind of hamstring injuries in a different way but he still felt it and we all know how rarely Mo goes off or needs to go off so there is definitely something and we will see."

On whether Liverpool will look to send their own medical staff to assess Salah, he added: "We will see, that depends on the diagnosis. There will be an ultrasound and they will do an MRI and then we will know what it is and then we will see what Egypt plans. But it's too early [to say], sorry."

Salah is the Premier League's top scorer this season, netting 14 goals to sit alongside Manchester City's Erling Haaland, and he's also provided eight assists for his teammates. His form has led Liverpool to the top of the table after 20 games - their sole defeat the 2-1 reverse against Tottenham Hotspur that saw Luis Diaz's goal incorrectly ruled out for offside following a blunder from VAR.

Whether or not Salah can lead Liverpool to a second Premier League title in four years remains to be seen, but 90min understands he remains the primary target for the cash-rich Saudi Pro League. Al Ittihad unsuccessfully tried to lure Salah away from Anfield in August, though it's expected that Al Hilal - another of the four clubs bankrolled by PIF - will be the club in the mix this coming summer.
