Julian Nagelsmann has been announced as Germany's new head coach ahead of Euro 2024.

The DFB confirmed earlier this month they had parted ways with Hansi Flick following their shock 4-1 loss at home to Japan during the September international window, extending a poor run of four wins in 17 games.

Germany were also eliminated at the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and have not advanced beyond the last 16 of a tournament since Euro 2016.

They have now turned to Nagelsmann, who 90min understands was freed of his contract at Bayern Munich having been placed on gardening leave and replaced by Thomas Tuchel earlier this year.

This is the second time that Nagelsmann will succeed Flick in a job having been sworn in as his successor at Bayern in 2021.

"We have a European Championship in our own country. That's something special - something that happens every few decades," he said. "I focus everything on having a great tournament in a great country.

"I have a great desire to to take on this challenge. The appearance in Dortmund was the beginning. We will be a close-knit group next year."

90min reported in the aftermath of Flick's most recent dismissal that Germany considered Jurgen Klopp a top candidate for the job, but his agent stated in the following days that he wanted to remain at Liverpool.

Nagelsmann will now be charged with leading Germany into their Euro 2024 campaign on home soil next summer. They will end 2023 with a pair of friendlies against the United States and Mexico across the Atlantic in October, before making the short trip to Austria for one final exhibition in November.

During the back-end of the 2022/23 season, Nagelsmann held talks with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur about their vacancies at the time, but could not agree terms with either. Mauricio Pochettino and Ange Postecoglou were later handed those respective jobs.
