Josh Sargent: Things to know about the USMNT forward

Werder Bremen frontman Josh Sargent has been making waves in the Bundesliga this season, with the American already notching five league goals for the campaign.

At just 21 years of age, Sargent is already a regular for both club and country, with his recent goalscoring exploits helping to alleviate any lingering relegation fears Bremen may have had.

So, who is this wonderkid who seems destined for a career right at the very top?

1. He's from a sporting family

Some people are just destined to be good at sport and Sargent definitely falls into that bracket.

The frontman is from a family of former athletes, with his dad playing both football and basketball during his time at university, while his mum also played football as well as softball (not even sure that's an actual sport but we'll go with it).

2. He's enjoying the most prolific top-flight season of his career

While Sargent's obvious talents have long been hyped, the youngster has struggled to find the back of the net with regularity in the Bundesliga.

His recent run of three goals in four games has taken his league tally for the campaign up to five - the most he's scored in a single top-flight season in his career so far.

The only other occasion he's scored more than five in a campaign was when he scored seven in 12 appearances for the Bremen reserve side in the fourth tier of German football.

3. Followed in Freddy Adu's footsteps

This may not sounds like much of a compliment considering anyone who knows anything about football is well aware that Freddy Adu didn't quite live up to the hype that surrounded him as a teenager.

However, as a youngster Adu was talked of as the next big thing in the sport and he became the first American to feature at both the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cup in the same year - before Sargent achieved the feat back in 2017.

He even went one better than Adu and earned himself a call-up to the senior squad that very same year, becoming the first American player ever to do so.

4. He's even more lethal at international level

While Sargent's domestic goals tally may not be particularly impressive, he seems to thrive at international level.

The 21-year-old has an impressive strike rate of almost a goal every other game with the USMNT, scoring five in his 12 appearances for the senior side.

He was even more prolific with the American youth sides, notching five goals in five games at the Under-17 CONCACAF Championship.

5. Playing style comparisons

Sargent's style of play has been compared to that of former Werder Bremen and Peru frontman Claudio Pizarro.

Both are noted for their powerful frame, clever movement and ability to find the back of the net, and if Sargent can score half the amount of goals Pizarro managed in his 73 spells in the Bundesliga then he'll be doing alright for himself.

6. FIFA 21 rating

In FIFA's Career Mode, Sargent starts off as a fairly average 74-rated forward. However, his potential is 82, making him a worthwhile investment as a young prospect.
