Inter Miami continue to add to their squad for head coach Gerardo 'Tata' Martino with the signing of midfielder Diego Gomez from Paraguayan side Club Libertad.

The 20-year-old will have the chance to play alongside not only Lionel Messi, but Sergio Busquets as well in the midfield. Gomez has four appearances with the Paraguay nation team and will take up one of Miami's U22 Initiative roster slots.

The deal has Gomez staying at DRV PINK Stadium through the 2026 Major League Soccer season, with the club having an option to extend for a further year in 2027. With Messi and Busquets in the side at Martino at the helm, recruiting just got a whole lot easier for the Herons.

"Diego is a well-rounded midfielder that we believe will contribute in all phases of the game," Inter Miami sporting director and chief soccer officer Chris Henderson said in a release. "We believe in his ability and potential, and feel he will be a strong addition to our squad as we enter this next phase of growth at Inter Miami."

Gomez made over 50 fifty appearances for Club Libertad, scoring six goals in the process before joining Miami. He joins a midfield that boasts the likes of Benjamin Cremaschi, Dixon Arroyo and Jean Mota and Gregore, who are currently on their way back from LCL and Lisfranc injuries respectively.

The addition of Gomez may go under the radar given the anticipation and excitement about Messi and Busquets. But according to the Paraguayan press, Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion were interested in the player, making the signing that much better. The Seagulls are known to have an efficient scouting system, and it's no surprise that they were looking for another Paraguay international after the emergence of Julio Enciso last season.

"I'm very happy to join Inter Miami at an exciting time for the club," the young midfielder said. "I believe that we can compete and I will fight to help the club achieve its goals. I’m looking forward to wearing the Inter Miami colors and playing in front of our fans."

Inter Miami are gearing up for their opening 2023 Leagues Cup game against Liga MX outfit Cruz Azul on July 21, when Messi and Busquets are expected to make their club debuts.
