Brentford's Ivan Toney has joked head coach Thomas Frank wants to get rid of him after admitting the club may be forced into selling the striker.

Toney's contract at the Gtech Community Stadium expires in 2025 and talks have not progressed over a new deal.

In one of his semi-regular chats with Danish media earlier this week, Frank revealed Toney is likely to be sold in the summer transfer window, with Arsenal and Chelsea perennially linked with the England international.

"It's quite obvious that Ivan Toney will most likely be sold in the summer," Frank told Tipsbladet.

"It can be expensive to sell your best player, but on the other hand, I also know that by summer, he'll only have a year left on his contract with us.

"We also know what he's worth. I don't think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now.

"He's a really good striker who is in his prime footballing age. Personally, as a coach, I would prefer to keep Toney, but one day it could be fun to see him at a top team."

Toney has scored three goals in four Brentford games since returning from an eight-month betting ban, with the Bees taking six points from the last 12 available to them to give them some breathing space in the fight against relegation, climbing to 14th in the Premier League table.

Speaking to BBC's Match of the Day after scoring in Saturday's 2-0 win at Wolves, Toney said his focus was on keeping Brentford up.

"I'm a Brentford player at the moment, nobody can predict the future, whatever happens happens, but the main thing and the main focus right now is do well for Brentford, keep them in the league, getting goals and three points."

When asked about Frank's comments over a summer transfer, Toney laughed: "I see that as he doesn't want me!

"The manager's said what he's said. But listen, I can't make clubs come and get me. I've just got to keep doing what I do and that's score goals. Like I said, what will be will be."
