Harry Kane is in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a new contract that could see him receive a pay rise close to £400k a week, after he eventually accepted defeat in his bid to leave north London and join Manchester City.

The 28-year-old's current deal runs until the summer of 2024, but after the Citizens failed to match Daniel Levy's £150m valuation of the player, he wants to be paid accordingly.

According to The Times, Kane is asking for a pay rise up to £400k a week to compensate for his missed opportunity of joining Man City, where he would have certainly been handed a more lucrative contract than his current deal in north London.

Spurs are likely to only offer him such a profitable contract if it were based on goalscoring bonuses, while the forward could use the opportunity to finally insert a release clause, forcing the club to accept any bid which matches that figure.

The England captain already received an increase to his salary last summer, after agreeing to a wage close to £300k a week, having been refused the chance to leave the club.

But talks are being held over another possible new contract for the talisman, as the dust settles on a dramatic and divisive summer for Kane and Tottenham.

The striker has been angling for a move to the Etihad Stadium all summer, after announcing he wanted a fresh challenge in order to compete for the biggest trophies on offer. However, despite the Citizens' interest, a deal could not be agreed, and the forward announced he would be staying for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

"It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I've had in the last few weeks," Kane began.

"I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100% focused on helping the team achieve success."

Kane made his first appearance of the season as a substitute in the 1-0 victory over Wolves on Sunday, having been given extra time off to help his recovery from Euro 2020 duties with England.

He then caused more controversy by failing to report back to training on time, although he denied these claims, once again creating friction between himself and the fanbase. He'll be hoping that supporters are able to move on from this debacle, although demanding more money following a failed transfer may not endear him further to the fanbase.
