Sergio Reguilon has revealed he was left confused by Tottenham and manager Ange Postecoglou's decision to send him out on loan despite featuring regularly in pre-season.

The Spanish left-back arrived in north London in 2020 after a breakout loan spell with Sevilla, winning the 2019/20 Europa League.

He was a regular in Jose Mourinho's defence when he first signed and then featured prominently at wing-back under Antonio Conte. However, the 27-year-old was sent to Atletico Madrid for the 2022/23 season and has played for both Manchester United and Brentford on temporary deals so far this term.

Reguilon played in pre-season in the summer and has claimed boss Postecoglou told him he would be part of his squad, only for that agreement to dissolve shortly afterwards.

He told The Times: "One day is 'yes', next day is 'no', I didn’t understand and still don't understand the situation.

"During pre-season I was very happy and he [Postecoglou] was happy with me, also the staff. I was playing like a normal player, all the games. The week before, I went to see him. 'You want me at the club?' 'Yes, I have to do a list and you are in my squad'. It was strange. The next day I was out of the training and I didn't know what happened."

Destiny Udogie has emerged as Postecoglou's favoured left-back and has impressed in his debut campaign in England, while Ben Davies has been used when the Italian has been absent.

He added: "I know I can play in Spurs, but in many aspects in football the player doesn't have control. And I don't want to stay to sit in the stadium watching. I am 27, I have too much football to live. I don't understand why one day is 'yes' and next day is 'no' but...I don't think it's performance reason, I think it's another reason, this is football, this is business.

"When one window closes, another door opens. Karma was good for me. I went to United. The people there are unbelievable. I don't know why but I still receive a lot of messages. I love them because from the first moment they gave me so much love. Maybe the way I play, always giving everything, and they love that."

Reguilon arrived at Old Trafford as back-up for both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, both of whom are currently sidelined with injuries. That spell was cut short in January before a move to Brentford was confirmed later that month.
