Norway have confirmed that Erling Haaland will not feature in Sunday's meeting with Scotland as a result of the ankle injury he suffered earlier this week.

Haaland came off the bench in the 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands and twisted his ankle, but he played through the pain and played the full second half.

After the match, Norway doctor Ola Sand suggested Haaland had overcome the pain of the injury fairly quickly but, after further checks, the Norway medical chief has now confirmed Haaland will not feature on Sunday against Scotland.

"The injury is not serious, but he is in so much pain and somewhat restricted function that the Scotland game unfortunately comes a little too early," Sand said in a statement.

Norway's update will only add to the concern from City fans as they prepare for their team's return to Premier League action against Liverpool on November 25.

Should Haaland, who has 17 goals in 18 games this season, fail to recover from his knock in time for the Liverpool game, manager Pep Guardiola may be forced to return Julian Alvarez to his natural position at the top of the team sheet.

Alvarez, however, is expected to be in action with Argentina against Brazil in the early hours of Wednesday morning and therefore may not get much time to recover before Liverpool arrive at Etihad at 12:30 (GMT) on Saturday.

Guardiola could also turn to another Norwegian to help replace Haaland. 20-year-old winger Oscar Bobb, who has managed seven appearances for City this year, netted his first international goal against the Faroe Islands and also chimed in with an assist.
