Erick Gutierrez is headed back to Liga MX, joining Chivas de Guadalajara after five years with Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven.

Gutierrez departs PSV following a triumphant run, winning four major trophies while recording 12 goals in 141 appearances. But after making just 13 starts last season, the 28-year-old opted for a different route to become a regular on the starting 11.

"I’m really happy - those who are close to me know just what this means to me," Gutierrez said. "From the first moment that Chivas approached me, coming here was always my first choice."

"I had other opportunities in European soccer and here in Mexico, but I was focused on coming to Chivas. In interviews that I’ve done before, I’ve always said that this is a club I’ve always wanted to play for."

Gutierrez returns to Mexico as an experienced player that competed in all levels of Europe: the Europa Conference League, the Europa League, and the Champions League as well as featuring for El Tri at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. And he's no stranger to Liga MX either.

Before jetting off to Europe in 2018, Gutierrez featured for Pachuca. He rose through the team's academy before recording 23 goals in 178 appearances and boasting the captain's armband.

Chivas kicked off the 2023 Apertura in style, winning 2-1 over Club Leon as Jonathan Padilla scored a late winner in the 81st minute. Gutierrez's arrival will be nothing but positive for Chivas as they look to bring home silverware this season following their fall in the 2023 Clausura final.
