Edinson Cavani's international ban following red card against Brazil revealed

Uruguay international Edinson Cavani has been handed a two-match international ban after he was sent off against Brazil in a World Cup qualifier in November last year.

The Manchester United forward was awarded a straight red card in the 71st minute of game after his reckless challenge on Everton frontman Richarlison left the Brazil forward needing medical attention.

Uruguay went on to lose the game 2-0, a result which leaves Oscar Tabarez's team outside of the four automatic qualification places for the 2022 World Cup.

However, with the qualification process still in its infancy, Uruguay still have plenty of time to book their place at the tournament in Qatar next year, though they'll be without their veteran forward for their next two outings.

It has been announced that FIFA have handed Cavani a two-game ban for his mis-timed challenge on Richarlison, a sanction which means he will miss his side's clashes with Argentina and Bolivia at the end of March.

Speaking after the game in November, Richarlison claimed the tackle could have left him seriously injured, though he seemed to hold no grudge over his Premier League counterpart.

"I think it was a ball dispute, he went over the top," he said as reported by MEN. "If my foot was stuck it might have even broken my ankle, but I think it wasn’t bad. He tried to steal the ball and ended up missing."

The announcement of the disciplinary action will come as a huge blow for Uruguay given Cavani's impressive form for both club and country in recent months.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward has already opened his account for Uruguay in their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign, while his impressive performances for Manchester United have seen him notch three goals in his previous five Premier League outings.
