Dean Henderson reveals he feared his Man Utd career was over after mistake against Liverpool

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has admitted that he feared his career at Old Trafford was over after his blunder against fierce rivals Liverpool, while he was on loan at Sheffield United last season.

The 24-year old was enjoying the second year of his loan spell at Bramall Lane, throughout which he thoroughly impressed, when he let a Georginio Wijnaldum volley squirm under his body and into the net behind him. The 70th minute goal proved to be the winner for Liverpool on the day.

Despite having never played for Manchester United at that point, Henderson has said he was worried that his Red Devils career might've been over before it even started.

According to The Mirror, the goalkeeper told YouTube channel UMM: "After the Liverpool game last season when I dropped a howler through my legs, I sort of thought 'my Manchester United career is gone now because it’s against Liverpool.'

"But then there’s another game around the corner and you always get the opportunity to come again and I think I got three clean sheets and three Player of the Match awards after that."

The England international now seems to be first choice for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United. He has started each of their last three Premier League games, keeping clean sheets in all, and helped his side progress to the Europa League quarter-finals after helping see out a 1-0 win away at AC Milan in the round of 16 second leg.

The 24-year old has revealed that his route to the top was far from straightforward.

"From the journey I’ve been on for the last five or six years, no one has handed me anything," Henderson revealed.

"I knew if I was going to do it, I would have to do it the hard way. I had a goalkeeper at the time [De Gea] who was probably the best in the world so I knew sitting at Manchester United, I couldn’t physically break through as I would just be seen as the young lad. So I had to go out on loan and I had to perform and do well. It was about having the resilience to bounce back all the time."

Henderson kept 35 clean sheets in 86 Blades matches and, since returning to Old Trafford, his 12 clean sheets in 19 games (conceding just 13 goals) has seen him establish himself as a key member of the squad.
