David de Gea opens up on Man Utd's 'disaster' 2021/22 season

David de Gea has admitted that Manchester United's 2021/22 season was 'unacceptable' and 'embarrassing'.

After finishing 2nd in the 2020/21 campaign and narrowly losing the Europa League final, Man Utd went into the following term with high expectations following the signings of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, results and performances nosedived and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021. He was replaced by Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis until the end of the season, but fortunes seldom improved and Man Utd finished with their lowest ever points tally in the Premier League era.

Speaking to the Guardian, De Gea - who often fronted for the TV cameras after dismal defeats last year - insists the club cannot afford for such a season to transpire again under Erik ten Hag.

"We cannot do the same because it was a disaster. I really hope we’re going to play much better. It was very tough, embarrassing sometimes. Some games were a mess. It was painful, unacceptable. Sometimes, you have to feel pain to go up and keep going," he said.

When asked if this was his lowest point at the club, De Gea replied: "Probably in the way we played,. The way we conceded chances."

The Spaniard is entering his 12th season at Old Trafford and will likely break the 500-match mark for the club this coming year, only requiring 13 more appearances to do so. He has one year left on his current deal with the option for a further 12 months, and admitted he would be open to staying in Manchester for the rest of his career.

"Yeah, if it’s possible. If they let me stay I will stay, for sure. I’m really comfortable, happy and hopefully before I leave we can win something more," De Gea added.

"I didn’t talk with anyone yet [about a renewal] but of course, because I want to be here for more years."
