Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has urged his attacking teammates to be more clinical after Thursday night’s Europa League win over Omonia Nicosia wasn’t settled until the 92nd minute.

United substitute Scott McTominay scored the only goal of the game, eventually finding a way past inspired stand-in Omonia goalkeeper Francis Uzoho in stoppage time.

Erik ten Hag’s side had dominated the match and had more than 30 total shots. But even with United fan Uzoho in inspired form – Paul Scholes did remark afterwards on BT Sport they were still saves he should expect to make – there were opportunities to win more comfortably.

"I think we should be more clinical,” De Gea, largely a spectator, told MUTV.

“We could finish the game 3-0 or 4-0. In the end, we missed our chances, but we never give up, we keep fighting to the end and it was a great goal from Scott.”

McTominay himself told BT Sport the victory was a ‘massive’ one for United, given that Real Sociedad won handsomely in their game and still lead the group – only group winners get straight through to the last 16, with runners-up forced to play an additional knockout tie.

“Everyone wants to win the group, it’s important for the games coming ahead,” he said.

“We’ve got a really good team spirit within the group, where everyone keeps going and fighting for your place every single week and, for us, their goalie was outstanding which is unfortunate but we managed to get the goal in the end, which was good.”
