Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has claimed his side felt 'overwhelmed' by Manchester City during the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday,

Los Blancos' defence of the European Cup came to an end with a 4-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium, losing 5-1 on aggregate.

Bernardo Silva scored a quickfire brace in the first half as Man City began to run away with the tie. An own goal from Eder Militao essentially sealed Real Madrid's exit before Julian Alvarez came off the bench and compounded their misery with a fourth goal in stoppage time.

Speaking post-match, Carvajal - who was ran ragged by Jack Grealish - admitted that Real Madrid were outclassed on the night.

"We played a rival who were better than us in this match - they pretty well overwhelmed us," he said.

"We can recognise that City were better, we were lacking something. It wasn't attitude we were lacking but we allowed ourselves to be pressed back too much. In the second half, we had our best moments.

"We knew that City were very strong at home but after the first leg we were left with the feeling that we could be better than this here - better on the ball.

"We are Madrid; we'll come back stronger and we'll work really hard next season to be back at this stage of the tournament."

Real Madrid now have little to play for this season after losing out to Barcelona in La Liga's title race. They did, however, win the Copa del Rey at the start of May.

Man City, meanwhile, are still on course for the treble. They can wrap up a third-successive Premier League title this weekend ahead of an FA Cup final meeting with local rivals Manchester United and their Champions League showdown with Inter early next month.
