Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes Second Male Player to Score 100 International Goals

Cristiano Ronaldo became just the second male player ever to score 100 international goals during Tuesday night's Nations League action.

The Juventus forward achieved the milestone by netting a free kick from range during Portugal's clash with Sweden in Stockholm, giving his side the lead. He curled in his 101st later in the second half.

His latest cap was his 165th, having made his Navegadores debut all the way back in 2003. Ronaldo scored his first international goal a year later against Greece at Euro 2004, a tournament Portugal hosted.

He has since scored in numerous friendlies and qualifiers as well as the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 editions of the World Cup. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid man has also netted in each European Championship tournament he has appeared in, helping Portugal win the 2016 version.

Ronaldo also scored a hat trick in the Nations League semi final against Switzerland before his side went on to beat the Netherlands in the final.

He remains behind only Iran legend Ali Daei on total goals scored, with Daei currently sat on 109.

No active player is an immediate threat to Ronaldo's bid to become the highest international goalscorer ever in the men's game, with 36-year-old India captain Sunil Chhetri registering 72 strikes so far. Of the more world renowned stars, Argentina's Lionel Messi has 70, while Poland's Robert Lewandowski and Brazil's Neymar both have 61.

17 women's players have achieved the 100 goals milestone. Canada's Christine Sinclair leads the way with a massive 186, with USWNT legends Abby Wambach, Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly managing 184, 158 and 130 respectively.

Carli Lloyd, Marta and Alex Morgan, who all still play for their national sides, each have over 100 international goals.
