Rotation and changes are expected from Thomas Tuchel, which is could mean Kepa Arrizabalaga, Ross Barkley, Saul Niguez and Hakim Ziyech come into the starting lineup.

Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner remain out, while N'Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic probably won't be risked for this one.

James Ward-Prowse serves the final game of a three-match ban, while Jack Stephens and Mohamed Elyounoussi miss out through injury.

Armando Broja has started both the previous games in this competition but is ineligible to play against his parent club. He would have been an injury doubt anyway.

Fraser Forster could return in goal and there is likely to be some other rotation.

Chelsea vs Southampton head to head record

These two sides have met once already this season, with Chelsea winning 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League - Trevoh Chalobah, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell got the goals.

That was actually Chelsea's first win over the Saints in two years, with two of the intervening games ending as draws and Southampton winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day in 2019.

The clubs last met in this competition in November 1997 when Tore Andre Flo and Jody Morris scored in a 2-1 Chelsea win that was decided in extra-time. That was also a fourth round tie.

Chelsea vs Southampton score prediction

Chelsea should still have enough quality in their ranks to beat Southampton here, even with a rotated lineup. That being said, it is likely to be a slightly closer contest than the Premier League meeting earlier this season, with Southampton in marginally better form now than then.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Southampton
