Chelsea mark anniversary of West Brom nightmare with Brentford humiliation

What is it about the first weekend in April, in a home game they are overwhelming favourites to win, that doesn't work for Chelsea?

April 3, 2021 is a date which most Chelsea fans have tried to wipe from their memories. That day, Stamford Bridge was the scene of one of the biggest surprises in the recent history of the club as West Brom, dead certs to be relegated from the top division (which they promptly were) romped to a 5-2 victory.

Five-two.

Fast forward 364 days, and here we are again.

On the same weekend, the same Saturday in the Premier League calendar and after an international break, Chelsea were humiliated once again.

This time, it was newly promoted Brentford who rocked up to Stamford Bridge and delivered the battering. 4-1 was the scoreline and anyone watching, and being honest with themselves, will admit it could have easily been more.

The Blues had gone ahead through a thunderbolt from Antonio Rudiger shortly after half-time, but the German seemingly decided his game was done there as he, along with his Chelsea teammates, let Brentford walk all over him to the tune of four unanswered goals.

Vitaly Janelt helped himself to two, Christian Eriksen bagged what turned out to be the winner (the only feel good part of this terrible Chelsea tale) before substitute Yoane Wissa sealed the deal minutes from full-time.

We lost this weekend in 2019/20 to Covid-19, but blessed be the glory days of April 3, 2019, when Chelsea blew Brighton away with a 3-0 win.

What a distant memory that seems after Brentford's runaway win in west London, the second time in a year that Thomas Tuchel's side have capitulated in front of their own supporters.
