CF Montreal have announced they'll be without midfielder Matko Miljevic for the start of the 2023 MLS season after suffering a left meniscus tear.

The injury occurred during last weekend's pre-season friendly against the Houston Dynamo, with Montreal confirming Milijevic will be sidelined for up to three months.

Miljevic's injury is a particular blow to new head coach Hernan Losada after attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic departed for Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar. The 21-year-old was expected to shoulder the majority of Montreal's creative duties following the sale of Mihailovic.

Miljevic has two goals and one assist in 27 regular-season appearances so far since joining from Argentine top-flight side Argentinos Juniors in 2021. Egyptian Ahmed Hamdi and youngster Sean Rea are the natural replacements in Miljevic's position.

Losada is looking to guide CF Montreal into the MLS Cup Playoffs after previous head coach Wilfried Nancy saw them to a second-place finish in the Eastern Conference last year.

The Canadian side begin the 2023 campaign away at Inter Miami on February 25.
