CF Montreal 1-0 Toronto FC player ratings: MacNaughton OG gives hosts Canadian Classique win

CF Montreal returned to winning ways with a 1-0 Rivalry Week victory over Toronto FC in the Canadian Classique on Saturday.

Wilfried Nancy's side had fallen to 4-0 and 2-1 defeats against the LA Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City, respectively, in their previous two matches, but had the chance to get back on track against their fiercest foes.

It was a match that Montreal largely dominated, with Matko Miljevic carving out a number of chances, though Kei Kamara and Romell Quioto were wasteful, while Alex Bono pulled off some huge saves in the TFC net.

But just as frustration was starting to set in, Quioto went up for an Alistair Johnston cross to the far post in the 69th minute, only to force TFC defender Lukas MacNaughton to head into his own goal.

MTL saw Kamal Miller harshly sent off after receiving a second yellow card for an overhead kick attempt, but Toronto simply didn't have enough in attack to make their late numerical advantage count.

The Reds are now winless in five MLS matches, losing four, and will be desperate to get Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi on the field as soon as possible to climb up from 13th in the East.

James Pantemis (GK) - 9/10 - Kept his concentration well to make a couple of important saves. The one to deny O'Neill right at the end was the pick of the bunch.

Joel Waterman (CB) - 6/10 - Didn't have much to do defensively, meaning he could push forward and get involved in the attack.

Rudy Camacho (CB) - 7/10 - Solid, no-nonsense defending.

Kamal Miller (CB) - 7/10 - Played a hybrid role, defending as a center-back but adding an extra body on the left flank in attack. Did both tasks well. Given a very harsh second yellow for a high boot as he attempted an overhead kick.

Alistair Johnston (RWB) - 8/10 - Missed his mark with a number of crosses but got the vital one right to assist the winning goal. Lively all match.

Victor Wanyama (CM) - 7/10 - Cool under pressure and moved the ball well apart from the odd sloppy pass.

Samuel Piette (CM) - 7/10 - Was positive and progressive with the ball, and typically bullish without it.

Lassi Lappalainen (LWB) - 6/10 - Not as active as Johnston but still had his moments.

Matko Miljevic (CAM) - 7/10 - Was lively throughout, popping up across the pitch to open up the TFC defense and create chances.

Kei Kamara (ST) - 5/10 - Battled hard and gave the TFC defenders a tough night but missed too many chances.

Romell Quioto (ST) - 8/10 - Just when it looked like it'd be a night of frustration for Quioto, he popped up to force the winning goal, though it'll go down as an OG. Never let the TFC defense settle, was electric throughout.

SUB: Djordje Mihailoic (60', for Miljevic) - 8/10 - Completely changed the game, increasing the tempo of Montreal's play and adding quality in the final third. Looking sharp despite a lengthy period out.

SUB: Mason Toye (60', for Kamara) - 5/10 - Tried to stretch the TFC defense but didn't get much joy.

SUB: Zachary Brault Guillard (79', for Johnston) - 6/10 - Added energy in place of Johnston.

SUB: Gabriele Corbo (84', for Quioto) - 6/10 - Did enough to help see out the game.

2. Toronto FC (3-4-3)

Alex Bono (GK) - 8/10 - The scoreline would have been a lot worse for TFC without Bono, who made a few impressive saves.

Shane O'Neill (CB) - 5/10 - A very busy night, often caught out of position and outnumbered.

Lukas MacNaughton (CB) - 3/10 - A mess defensively and scored the own goal that gave Montreal the win.

Domenico Criscito (CB) - 6/10 - A tough debut with a few questionable moments, but was the best of TFC's defenders. Looked good with the ball.

Kosi Thompson (RWB) - 5/10 - Made some dangerous forward runs and was a decent attacking presence, but left a lot of gaps.

Michael Bradley (CM) - 5/10 - Was outrun in midfield and didn't offer enough beyond a couple of eye-catching passes.

Mark-Anthony Kaye (CM) - 7/10 - Got through a huge amount of defensive work but still had time to be one of Toronto's biggest threats. Needed help.

Luca Petrasso (LWB) - 5/10 - Too quiet, the odd dangerous cross aside.

Deandre Kerr (FW) - 4/10 - Wasteful and anonymous.

Jesus Jimenez (FW) - 2/10 - Barely got involved, gave the Montreal defense an easy night.

Ayo Akinola (FW) - 5/10 - Was very unlucky to see a goal ruled out for offside. Worried Montreal's defense with his pace, but they were able to handle it.
