Manchester United travel to Barcelona on Thursday for a Europa League knockout round play-off game that many people feel is actually the pick of the midweek continental fixtures.

The Red Devils find themselves facing Barca after failing to topple Real Sociedad in Group E of the competition - though they did a win respectable five games out of six - while the Catalan giants failed to progress from the group stages of the Champions League for a second successive season.

The two sides are actually two of the most in-form sides anywhere in Europe, with United threatening to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title and Barcelona streaking clear at the top of La Liga.

Their two-legged clash begins at Camp Nou on Thursday night and marks the first opportunity for Casemiro to return to Barcelona after joining United from Real Madrid in the summer.

The Brazilian spent a successful decade with Barca's Clasico rivals and his experience could be key as United bid to keep themselves in the tie before returning to Old Trafford next Thursday.

Casemiro was a relatively late bloomer at Real Madrid, initially joinining on loan in 2013 but enjoying his breakthrough season during 2015/16. Prior to that, he made a fleeting number of appearances during 2013/14 before heading off to Portuguese giants Porto on a season-long loan deal.

Upon his return, Casemiro established himself as a first-team regular at the Bernabeu, and his presence in midfield coincided with an upturn in the club's fortunes at Camp Nou.

In fact, he switched up Madrid for Manchester in 2022 after playing 10 times for Real at Camp Nou across all competitions - remarkably tasting defeat just once.

Casemiro emerged from five of those games on the winning side - including his last three outings - and his only reverse came when a Luis Suarez-inspired Barca wiped the floor with Real during the 2018/19 La Liga season.

Is Casemiro available to face Barcelona?

Manchester United fans may be worried that Casemiro is not available for the trip to Barcelona, owing to his red card against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Fortunately his three-game ban is reserved for domestic fixtures only, meaning the 30-year-old is available in midfield for Erik ten Hag. Casemiro is likely to be partnered by the resurgent Fred, with Marcel Sabitzer suspended following an accumulation for European bookings at Bayern Munich.
