The 2023/24 Premier League campaign gets underway on Friday night as Vincent Kompany leads his newly promoted Burnley side into battle against his former club.

Kompany's Clarets emerged as one of the all-time great second tier outfits last season as they won the Championship while accumulating over 100 points. They were utterly dominant, and many have tipped Kompany's men for success in the top flight.

Their start to the season couldn't be much tougher, however, as they face an all-conquering Man City outfit at Turf Moor. Pep Guardiola's side claimed a historic treble in June, and although they've lost a couple of key faces over the summer, City remain the favourites to claim an unprecedented fourth-straight Premier League title in 2023/24.

Here's 90min's preview of Friday's Premier League opener between Burnley and City.

Burnley team news

Kompany is set to hand competitive debuts to summer signings James Trafford, Jordan Beyer, Dara O’Shea and Zeki Amdouni, with each playing significant roles in Burnley's pre-season.

The Clarets have little to be concerned about on the injury front heading into the new season, with Premier League fans bound to see a completely different iteration of the previously agricultural Burnley outfit led by Sean Dyche.

Man City team news

There are no fresh injury worries for Guardiola in the wake of last Sunday's Community Shield defeat, with Kevin De Bruyne earning minutes off the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Nathan Ake is also in contention, with new arrival Josko Gvardiol likely to start on the bench. Mateo Kovacic, however, should retain his place in midfield.

Ederson will come back into the side with De Bruyne likely to replace Julian Alvarez.

Burnley vs Man City score prediction

Kompany's side are a far cry from the Burnley teams that frustrated so many during their previous stint in the top flight. The Clarets were joyous to watch in the Championship last season, and Friday will be the ultimate test of their credentials.

Some might say that this is the best time to face Guardiola's side. The Cityzens aren't revered for their lightning fast starts, and, with time left in the transfer window, City are bound to reach their apex much further down the line.

Although Guardiola wouldn't have been too concerned with his side's defeat in the Community Shield, the contest depicted that City aren't quite where the Spaniard wants them to be heading into the new season. Thus, there's a chance for the exuberant and confident newly-promoted side to take points off the imperious champions.

Prediction: Burnley 2-2 Man City
