Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Hoffenheim: Player ratings from a home defensive disasterclass

Borussia Dortmund shot themselves in the foot as some shambolic defending meant Erling Haaland's late goal was only enough to secure a 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim.

Defensive mishaps from both sides were the feature of the first half, but it was Jadon Sancho who eventually found the breakthrough after good work from Haaland and Raphael Guerreiro allowed the Englishman to break clear and slot home calmly.

The lead lasted just six minutes, though, as dire defensive positioning gave Mu'nas Dabbur the opportunity to poke home and level the scores. From a defensive standpoint, the start of the second half wasn't much better - evidenced by Marwin Hitz's weak punch from a corner, one that allowed Ihlas Bbebou to swoop in and head Hoffenheim in front.

Though much of their play was disjointed, the home side would not be denied a point as Haaland, who else, got himself on the scoresheet for the 39th time in Dortmund colours, capitalising on a sloppy midfield pass by Sebastian Rudy to slot home.

The results leave BVB sixth in the Bundesliga table, and they are now a whopping 15 points behind leaders Bayern Munich having played a game more.

Enough of all that, let's get to the Dortmund player ratings.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Marwin Hitz (GK) - 4/10 - Made a couple of great saves but looked shaky throughout the game. The stand-in goalkeeper was weak for the Hoffenheim second and it's easy to see why he is backup.

Emre Can (RB) - 4/10 - Largely at fault for Hoffenheim's equaliser, losing track of Dabbur in the build up and, overall, was a kamikaze defender. You learn from your mistakes? Someone tell Can.

Mats Hummels (CB) - 5/10 - An uncharacteristically sloppy performance from the German, particularly in the first half. Made up for it with a goal-saving tackle, but also missed a free header from six yards out - a real mixed bag.

Manuel Akanji (CB) - 4/10 - Handed Bebou an opportunity to run through on goal, and also found himself in no man's land for the equaliser. Constantly out of position.

Raphael Guerreiro (LB) - 6/10 - Looked really bright on the front foot, firstly playing Haaland through before grabbing the assist for Sancho's opener. Was disappointing at the back at times though.

2. Midfielders

Jude Bellingham (CM) - 8/10 - Showed the most tenacity and intent out of anyone in yellow. A really bright and mature performance from the 17-year old, which, bizarrely, ended early on 70 minutes.

Thomas Delaney (CM) - 6/10 - Had a solid enough outing, making five ball recoveries and allowing Bellingham the freedom to roam forwards. Offered nothing creatively.

Gio Reyna (AM) - 6/10 - Got forward well and into good advanced areas, but couldn't find the end product to actually create something.

3. Forwards

Julian Brandt (RW) - 4/10 - No key passes, no shots, just 28 touches. Really quiet and anonymous - one to forget, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

Erling Haaland (ST) - 8/10 - Did brilliantly to drop deep and initiate the move that led to Dortmund's first and, despite a couple of missed chances, ended his mammoth two-game goal drought to equalise for his side coolly.

Jadon Sancho (LW) - 6/10 - Tried his upmost to threaten Hoffenheim's backline but, apart from a lovely finish for the opener to get his fourth of 2021, did very little to worry the visitors.
