Manchester United secured Champions League football with a wave of optimism behind them last season, but supporters couldn't be more pessimistic as they approach their opening game of the 2023/24 campaign against Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils have plunged into crisis mode after they were methodically brushed aside by Brighton & Hove Albion without much resistance at the weekend. Erik ten Hag's side were lifeless without possession and often devoid of ideas with it as the Seagulls cruised to a 3-1 victory.

And it doesn't get much easier for Ten Hag, who takes his crumbling outfit to Bavaria on Wednesday night.

Buoyed by the arrival of a certain Harry Kane, Bayern Munich are aiming to challenge Manchester City in Europe this season, but Thomas Tuchel has several issues to iron out if the Bavarian giants are to re-emerge as a genuine Champions League contender.

Bayern were held in the Bundesliga on Friday night as Bayer Leverkusen struck late on the share the spoils.

Here's 90min's preview of their Champions League Group A clash.

Bayern Munich team news

Tuchel could make a few changes to his starting XI that were left frustrated on Friday night with Jamal Musiala and Noussair Mazraoui returning to the German's team. The former earned minutes off the bench against Leverkusen having missed Bayern's previous two games with a hamstring injury.

Manuel Neuer remains out for the hosts which means Sven Ulreich will continue between the sticks, while Raphael Guerreiro is yet to make his debut for the club.

Thomas Muller and Konrad Laimer are set to drop to the bench with Kane a shoo-in to make his Champions League debut for Bayern against familiar opposition.

Ten Hag certainly hasn't been helped by a long injury list at the start of 2023/24, and it's unlikely United's list of absentees will slim down in time for Wednesday's game.

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are out for the foreseeable which means summer arrival Sergio Reguilon could continue at left-back after impressing against Brighton. United also confirmed ahead of their trip to Bayern that Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to be out of action for 'several weeks' with a hamstring problem.

Mason Mount and Raphael Varane are both unlikely to be fit for the upcoming venture, but Sofyan Amrabat could make his debut for the club. The Moroccan international missed the Brighton defeat due to a minor injury.

Antony and Jadon Sancho won't feature.

Bayern Munich vs Man Utd score prediction

Bayern haven't quite hit top gear despite the arrival of a supreme goalscorer, but they could put on a show against a miserable Man Utd outfit.

The visitors have a mountain of issues heading into Wednesday's game, and we've seen many English sides over the years succumb to the Allianz Arena cauldron. It's just hard to envisage Ten Hag inspiring such a quick turnaround after Saturday's defeat, and they'll be facing up against a side that's enjoyed an extra day's rest.

While the visitors could have some joy exploiting the hosts' high line given their distributors and runners, they'll find it tough to contain the Bavarian giants on Wednesday.

Prediction: Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
