Bayern Munich have released a statement saying they 'disapprove' of manager Hansi Flick's announcement that he wants to leave the club in the summer.

The 56-year-old won a historic sextuple with Bayern in 2020 but has been heavily linked with succeeding Joachim Low as Germany manager in the summer. Die Roten's exit from the Champions League added fuel to the fire and he confirmed on Saturday that he wants to leave in the summer.

Flick said: “I told the team today that I would like to get out of my contract this summer. I already told those in charge after the Champions League knockout during the week.

"I wanted to tell the team personally. I also want to thank the club that gave me the opportunity to coach this team."

Bayern have since responded with a statement that confirms Flick has indeed held talks over his departure. The club are less than pleased with his decision to announce that publicly, though, and say talks are 'ongoing' over whether he will remain at Bayern for 2021/22.

The club statement reads: "On Saturday Hansi Flick, the head coach of FC Bayern, informed the public about his wish to terminate his contract, which runs until June 2023, at the end of the current season.

"Hansi Flick told this to the board of FC Bayern München AG last week. Hansi Flick and FC Bayern agreed to focus on the [upcoming] games against Wolfsburg, Leverkusen and Mainz so as not to disturb the full concentration of the entire club on these three important games.

"FC Bayern disapproves of the unilateral communication by Hansi Flick and will continue the talks as agreed after the game in Mainz."
