Bayern Munich confirm capture of Julian Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig

It has been confirmed that RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann will replace Hansi Flick as Bayern Munich manager in the summer.

Following their exit from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month, Die Roten boss Hansi Flick revealed he would be leaving his post as Bayern boss, with Sky Germany confirming that a mutual termination of his contract had been agreed.

News of Flick's imminent departure sent shockwaves across European football with the formerly interim coach having already guided the club to Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, Champions League and Club World Cup glory during his brief tenure.

Bayern took no time at all in pinpointing their main target for the role, with Nagelsmann top of the shortlist.

The young German boss was keen to move to the Allianz Arena - with a five-year contract already agreed between the two parties - though RB Leipzig's hefty compensation demands looked like scuppering their plans.

However, the German champions have thrashed out a deal which will see
Nagelsmann move to Bayern on 1 July 2021, with the agreement potentially netting RB Leipzig up to €25m should all the bonus clauses be triggered.

The eye-watering fee makes Nagelsmann the most expensive manager in Bundesliga history, with Die Roten bagging themselves one of the hottest prospects in European football.

In a short statement on Tuesday morning, Bayern said: "FC Bayern have appointed Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach. The Bavarian-born 33-year-old will move to Munich from RB Leipzig on 1 July 2021 ahead of the new season, signing a five-year-contract with the German record champions until 30 June 2026.

"This comes after FC Bayern agreed to current head coach Hansi Flick’s request to have his contract terminated on 30 June 2021, two years earlier than its original expiry date."

Speaking upon the announcement of his departure fro Leipzig, Nagelsmann said: "I will leave RB Leipzig with a heavy heart. I've been able to coach a special team here at a club with huge opportunities and the best possible conditions to work in.

"Everybody here, including the staff who work alongside the team, have ensured that we've written plenty of stories for the club's history books and are continuing to do so now. I'm really proud of that."

Despite Bayern looking good value to record a record ninth consecutive German title this season, Nagelsmann will have a huge job on his hands when he moves to the Allianz Arena.

Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently confessed the club were struggling to cope with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, with a number of big players including David Alaba and Jerome Boateng announcing they wouldn't be extending their deals with the club beyond the end of the current campaign.

Speculation surrounding Robert Lewandowski's future has also begun to circulate, and Nagelsmann will have plenty to do if he's to continue the club's dominance of the German top flight along with fighting for Champions League glory.
