Barcelona will not have a buy-back option to re-sign versatile academy graduate Marc Cucurella for a second time, as was previously the case when the player was sold to Eibar in 2019.

Cucurella joined Eibar for €2m in the summer of 2019 following a successful loan. Yet seemingly spying an opportunity to profit, Barça triggered a €4m buy-back option a little over two weeks later to take him back to Camp Nou and immediately loaned him to Getafe instead.

Getafe opted to trigger their option for a permanent €6m deal in early March, which appears to have now permanently cut Cucurella’s formal ties to Camp Nou.

Mundo Deportivo (MD) writes that there is no further buy-back clause included this time around, which means if Barça wanted the 21-year-old back again they would have to negotiate a fresh deal with Getafe from scratch in order to do it.

MD seeks to correct recent claims from other local media that Barça are considering making Cucurella part of the first-team at Camp Nou next season. The newspapers explains that is not going to be possible because Getafe have already triggered their option.

MD also adds that the only connection Barça have to Cucurella now is a clause that will entitle them to 40% of any profit Getafe make from a future transfer. Presumably that is not tantamount to a cashback-type discount if they themselves happen to be that buying club.

The suggestion is that Cucurella is now worth far more than the pre-arranged €6m Getafe sealed the deal for, owing to his role in once more helping the Madrid-based club challenge for a Champions League place after narrowly missing out last season.

Rather than go after Cucurella as extra cover at left-back, MD also notes that it remains Barça’s intention for now to keep faith with Junior Firpo, who only joined last August.
