Manchester United kick off the two-match European leg of their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils went unbeaten on their tour of Thailand and Australia, winning their opening three matches against Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace before succumbing to a late draw with Aston Villa.

Having returned home, they continue their buildup to the new season against an Atletico side that dumped them out of the Champions League just four months ago.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of this one.

Atletico Madrid team news vs Man Utd

Atletico Madrid take on Numancia in their first friendly of this pre-season campaign on Wednesday.

Assuming they come through that unscathed, Diego Simeone will have a close to a full squad to choose from, with only Joao Felix and Jose Maria Gimenez injury doubts.

Antoine Griezmann has been shopped around in the transfer market but suitors are yet to emerge, while Juventus are attempting to re-sign Alvaro Morata. New signings Axel Witsel and Samuel Lino could make an appearance, while Atletico are hoping to wrap up a deal for Nahuel Molina in the coming days.

Man Utd team news vs Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid are the first of Man Utd's two opponents this weekend, with Erik ten Hag set to face the Old Trafford crowd on Sunday against Rayo Vallecano.

With that in mind, it would be understandable for the Dutchman to rest most of his main stars and dish out game time to those who haven't featured too much so far this pre-season.

Christian Eriksen could make his first appearance for the club after joining on a free transfer, while the formalities of Lisandro Martinez's deal should be complete in time to feature, though probably not from the off.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester on Tuesday to discuss his future but it is unknown if he has resumed training yet.

(4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Van de Beek; Amad, Eriksen, Elanga; Martial

Atletico Madrid vs Man Utd prediction

While Atletico are just beginning their pre-season preparations, Man Utd are looking very polished four games into Ten Hag's reign.

Rotation could make them a little more jittery on the ball, but this will be about getting to grips with the Dutchman's principles more so than the result (but his rant after drawing to Villa shows he does still care about the final outcome, too).

For Atletico to get the better of a side looking pretty well drilled this month would be quite an ask so early into their friendly fixture list. The Red Devils should just about maintain their unbeaten summer here.

Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-2 Man Utd
