Atlanta United have re-signed goalkeeper Quentin Westberg to a one-year contract through the 2024 Major League Soccer season, stocking the team's shot-stopping department.

Westberg joined the Five Stripes ahead of the 2023 season after spending four years with Toronto FC, where he made 68 appearances and kept for the Reds during the 2019 MLS Cup.

Westberg will serve as the backup goalkeeper and the move to re-sign him for one more season comes after Atlanta signed free agent Josh Cohen last week. Cohen is expected to compete with captain and club legend Brad Guzan for the starting role, unless Guzan chooses to hang up his boots at 39-years-old.

"Quentin is an experienced goalkeeper and we are pleased to re-sign him for the 2024 season," Atlanta vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra said in a release.

"He is a good role model for our club, and with his experience in MLS and Europe, he will continue to add competition to our goalkeeping group."

Guzan was sidelined early on in the 2023 season with an MCL tear and would go on to miss eight games. Westberg stepped up to make six starts, conceding 10 goals and keeping one clean sheet against Colorado Rapids where Atlanta dominated in a 4-0 home win.

With Westberg in between the sticks for the six-game stretch, Atlanta recorded two wins, two draws and two losses.

Westberg becomes the third signing of the offseason after the Five Stripes brought in homegrown defender Garrison Tubbs alongside Cohen. Bocanegra and chief executive officer and president Garth Lagerway are shoring up the defensive end of the field for head coach Gonzalo Pineda, while star midfielder Thiago Almada's future remains unclear despite his contract running through the 2025 season.
