Atlanta United have loaned midfielder Santiago Sosa to Argentinian top flight side Racing Club for the 2024 campaign.

Sosa returns to the Argentinian first division where his professional career began with River Plate back in July 2018 after spending years rising through the ranks in the club's academy.

The 24-year-old defensive midfielder made 21 appearances for the South American giants before making his move to Atlanta for a reported transfer fee of $5.3m in January 2021. Sosa managed 70 appearances for Atlanta upon arrival from River, scoring two goals and tallying one assist.

The La Plata, Argentina native was a mainstay in Atlanta's starting XI for most of the 2021 season and the early stages of 2022 before injuries kept him out of action beginning in early May of that year. Sosa started off strong last term before injuries saw him remain sidelined for an extended period again.

Sosa will look to add to his trophy cabinet in Argentina where he's already lifted three trophies - 2018 CONMEBOL Libertadores, 2019 CONMEBOL Recopa and 2019 Copa Argentina.

Should Sosa impress at Racing, the 18-time Argentinian champions will have the chance to make his move permanent for $4m.

With Sosa out of the picture for 2024, Atlanta head coach Gonzalo Pineda will look to rely on the likes of Tristan Muyumba, Bartosz Slisz, Dax McCarty and Ajani Fortune in the middle of the park.
