Aston Villa host Southampton in the Premier League on Friday night as the English top flight restarts following a pause in respect for the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Steven Gerrard's side halted a three-game losing streak with a hard-fought point against the reigning champions Manchester City last time out. Southampton failed to convert several glaring chances in defeat to Wolves the Saturday before last, although they go into the weekend three points ahead of their upcoming hosts.

Aston Villa vs Southampton score prediction

Villa's dethroned captain Tyrone Mings admits that his side "struggle with consistency". However, Southampton are hardly models of dependability themselves, failing to record the same result - positive or otherwise - in consecutive Premier League matches this season (LDWLWL).

Southampton suffered their heaviest away defeat of last season at Villa Park, falling to a 4-0 loss with Philippe Coutinho the star. Neither the Brazilian nor his teammates have provided a great deal of evidence recently to suggest another triumph as emphatic but the home side could edge out their inconsistent visitors.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Southampton
