Arsenal have confirmed that Jurrien Timber sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament during Saturday's 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest and will need to undergo surgery.

The defender, who only joined the Gunners this summer from Ajax, made his first Premier League start, but had to be withdrawn just after half-time.

Timber limped into the half-time break after coming off worse from a foul on Brennan Johnson. He was cleared to play the second 45 but was hauled off around the 50-minute mark after going down again with no one around him.

Arsenal have now released a statement on Timber's injury, which threatens to end his entire first season in north London.

"Further to detailed assessments with consultant specialists since Saturday, we can confirm that Jurrien Timber has sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," a statement read.

"Jurrien will undergo surgery in the coming days and will be out of action for a period of time.

"The support and expertise from our medical team and everyone at the club will now be focussed on Jurrien's rehabilitation programme, to ensure he recovers well and is back playing as soon as possible."

Taking to social media, Timber himself said: "Gutted to share my injury is more serious than expected, especially after the warm welcome I've received. I wanted to repay you on the pitch, which will not be possible for the forthcoming period. Thanks for making me feel at home and see you at The Carpet."
