Technology giant Apple are rumoured to be interested in buying Manchester United for just short of £6bn.

The Glazer family released a statement on Tuesday night outlining their intention to welcome new investment at Old Trafford, effectively putting the club up for sale,

90min understands that selling up entirely would be the preferred move of the Glazers, although their announcement hinted that a part sale and minority investments would also be considered.

United have appointed Raine Group as their senior advisors to oversee the sale - they also oversaw the Todd Boehly-led acquisition of Chelsea - and a report from the Daily Star suggests technology behemoths Apple are ready to throw their hats into the ring.

Apple, who generate an annual revenue of £326m and are estimated to be worth around £2tn, are yet to dive into owning a sports franchise, but it's understood that the commercial opportunities that owning United would bring are a primary factor in a purchase being considered by CEO Tim Cook.

A bid of around £5.8bn has been mooted, although United have not publicly disclosed how much the club is on the market for. 90min understands that the Glazer family feel they can attain close to £8bn from interested parties, and a sale of around that figure would be more than ten times the £790m paid to buy United back in 2005.

British billionaire and Manchester United fan Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also expected to make a bid for the club - his company INEOS currently own Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice - while David Beckham is rumoured to be interesting in joining offers.
