Antonio Conte has admitted that he has a 'big challenge' ahead at Tottenham, but that he hopes to stay at the club 'for a long time'.

The Italian signed an initial 18-month deal on Tuesday with the option to extend, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo as head coach.

Spurs won their first game under Conte on Thursday, beating Vitesse 3-2 in a chaotic Europa Conference League match.

Conte admitted post-game that he wanted Spurs to be in control of that game and was disappointed by how frantic the win was, and has now recognised that he has quite the task ahead of him.

"This is a big challenge," he told a press conference on Friday. "I know very well that this club has not been winning [trophies] for many years.

"But I think to win, you have to build a winner, the win doesn't happen after one, two, three days, one, two months.

"I think you must have vision. I think this club has a great vision off the pitch. I think this is important if we want to win. The club has showed they work very well with the stadium, the training ground - now I think we need time and vision.

"The club took this choice [to appoint him] and I'm pleased, I'm honoured about this choice, but at the same time I need time to change something on the pitch."

Conte also said that he is not concerned with how short his initial contract, saying: "I think my contract is not a problem, 18 months.

"We decided [together], the club and I understood the sacrifices this club did for me. I think the best thing for us is to work together with the players, with the club, to understand that we can work together for a long time.

"I hope to work for this club for a long time for sure."
