Erik ten Hag has confirmed Anthony Martial is not fit to travel for Manchester United's trip to Southampton on Saturday.

The Frenchman came off the bench to deliver an assist for Marcus Rashford in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool, having missed the first two Premier League games due to fitness issues following what was a promising pre-season campaign.

While Martial has been ruled out of contention, Ten Hag did reveal more about new signing Casemiro's conditioning.

When asked about team news, Ten Hag replied: "You will see tomorrow. I will tell the team first. Anthony Martial is not fit.

"Casemiro is fit, he did all the training sessions. He [Martial] came out with a problem with his Achilles. I hope he will be available for the next game."

Martial had been expected to start alongside Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, who both scored on Monday night, but his absence will likely mean Anthony Elanga retains his spot in the starting XI with Cristiano Ronaldo again on the bench.

That victory over Liverpool lifted United up to 14th, having lost their openers to Brighton and Brentford, and another victory at St Mary's is needed as they look to climb the table.
