Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has claimed he was not intimidated by the Anfield atmosphere during Sunday's 0-0 draw with Liverpool.

The Red Devils were heavily tipped to be on the end of another thrashing on Merseyside following their poor start to the 2023/24 season, while their 7-0 hammering back in March was still lingering in the memory.

Jurgen Klopp's side started the game brightly and gave the home Anfield crowd encouragement early on, but United were ultimately able to stifle their hosts, mostly reducing them to crosses and long shots into several defenders.

Onana, on his first visit to Anfield in front of spectators having visited with Ajax in the Champions League during the Covid-affected 2020/21 season, was asked about the atmosphere post-match, but came up with a blunt response.

"I felt nothing," he told United's Sam Homewood.

Onana began Sunday evening's encounter looking a little shaky on crosses but he recovered well and went on to make eight crucial saves to help United preserve a point.

Liverpool registered 34 shots but many of those were off target or blocked, while United arguably had the game's best chances, with Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund both denied by close-range saves by Alisson during the second half.

Klopp's men missed the chance to go back to the top of the Premier League after Arsenal - who they face at Anfield on Saturday evening - beat Brighton & Hove Albion, while Aston Villa have the chance to move into first place at least temporarily with a victory at home to Sheffield United on Friday.

Erik ten Hag's side at least managed to get out of their recent rut which saw them meekly lose to Bournemouth and Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. They next travel to West Ham on Saturday.
