Americans Abroad: Josh Sargent injured, John Brooks scores
As the World Cup approaches, USMNT figures are working hard to get noticed by Gregg Berhalter by showing up for their clubs.
But this week saw several highs and lows for Americans abroad, as Josh Sargent returned to the sidelined after featuring for Norwich City, while John Brooks lifted Wolfsburg to a draw.
Here's what the American players are up to...
1. Josh Sargent is back on the sidelines
After making his long-awaited return to the pitch with Norwich City, it looks like Josh Sargent is headed back to the sidelines. The player aggravated his ankle injury during Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa, keeping him out for the rest of the season.
The result also relegated the Canaries from the English top-flight and into the Championship.
“He [Sargent] aggravated his ankle,” said manager Dean Smith post match.
“It was a bit of a risk to play him but we knew there were consequences depending on our result and other results elsewhere. He just aggravated it slightly, it won’t be too bad, but that was the reason he came off.”
2. Cameron Carter-Vickers is a wanted man
Southampton and Fulham are just two of the clubs interested in signing the Tottenham defender, 90min understands.
The USMNT figure has made himself known abroad after a successful loan stint at Celtic, recording four goals and making 42 appearances in all competitions.
While he is set to return to Tottenham, 90min understands that Spurs do not have plans to integrate him into the first-team squad. With the team open to selling the American, it could be a tight race for Carter-Vickers.
3. John Brooks scores for Wolfsburg
The USMNT figure scored his first goal of the season for Wolfsburg on Saturday in their 1-1 draw against Stuttgart.
The center back broke the deadlock at the Mercedes-Benz Arena only 13 minutes in, heading home Maximilian Arnold’s corner kick to find the left side of the net. Though it may have been the first of the season, the goal stands as Brooks’ 12th overall since joining the German league.
Despite his recent highs with the club, he is set to depart at the end of the season. Both Wolfsburg and Brooks announced earlier this year that he would not sign a new deal with the Bundesliga side.
4. Honorable mentions:
Erik Palmer-Brown played a crucial role in Troyes’ 3-0 win over Lille, delivering three clearances and two interceptions to help earn the clean sheet.
Brenden Aaronson lifted the Austrian Cup with Red Bull Salzburg for the second time in his European career.
Cole Bassett came off the bench to help Feyenoord in their 3-1 win over Fortuna Sittard on Sunday.
