The 7 players Gareth Southgate will cut from England's Euro 2020 squad
After months of speculation we are one step closer to learning Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2020.
On Tuesday Southgate named the 33 players who will train together in preparation for the tournament. Before Euro 2020 kicks off in June seven will heartbreakingly lose their place and be forced to watch the games at home like the rest of us.
The question is, who is making the cut and who is Southgate going to have a difficult conversation with? Here is who 90min thinks will be the unlucky seven to miss out.
1. Aaron Ramsdale
With Nick Pope injured, it is between Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale for the coveted third goalkeeper spot.
Both have had plenty of shot stopping practice this season playing for the two worst Premier League teams, but Johnstone should just get the nod.
As well as being more experienced, Johnstone has also shown himself to be more reliable. Where Ramsdale has made two errors leading to goals this campaign, the West Brom man did not register a single one.
As you might expect for custodians of two of the relegated clubs, the pair recorded the most saves of any Premier League keepers this season. However, Johnstone's 164 is superior to Ramsdale's 146.
2. Ben White
Don't get us wrong, Ben White is a good player who will no doubt go on to be capped by England in the future.
However, Southgate will not judge him to be ready just yet. Although the England boss is still sweating on the fitness of Harry Maguire, John Stones, Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady are all preferred by the Three Lions boss.
In addition, Reece James, Kyle Walker, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice and heck even Jordan Henderson are all capable of filling in at centre-back if required.
3. Ben Godfrey
Ben Godfrey was a somewhat surprising inclusion in the training squad. He has not been capped before and we are not expecting that to change this summer barring an injury crisis.
As mentioned above, there are just too many players that Southgate seems to prefer ahead of him.
4. Trent Alexander-Arnold
Selecting which three right-backs to take will be the toughest decision Southgate has had to make in his career.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kieran Tripper and Kyle Walker have had solid seasons and all of them could has a strong case for going to the tournament. Most likely, though, Alexander-Arnold could just miss out with Southgate tending to favour versatility in his defenders.
Saying that, a lot could change in terms of availability before the tournament. If Southgate can find a way to squeeze the Liverpool defender into the squad, he will no doubt do it...
5. James Ward-Prowse
James Ward-Prowse was one of only two outfield players to not miss a single minute of Premier League action this season - a feat he also managed the previous campaign.
Fortunately, he should be able to put his feet up this summer as we cannot see him making the final squad. Southgate has praised him in the past and has worked with him from his very first game at Under-21 level.
While that will leave him in a good position, the stunning form of Jude Bellingham will see him selected alongside mainstays Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson.
6. Bukayo Saka
It may seem harsh given he single handedly saved Arsenal from an even worse season this year, but Bukayo Saka is unlikely to survive the cull.
He does not lack talent but at both wide forward and wing-back, but there are players just ahead of him. Expect him to be right amongst it for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers though.
7. Ollie Watkins
Ollie Watkins edged out the likes of Danny Ings and Patrick Bamford to make the training squad after enjoying an impressive debut Premier League campaign.
Unfortunately, with Harry Kane likely to play every minute and Marcus Rashford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin capable of deputising, a place in the final 26 is likely a bridge too far.
