Atletico Madrid were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw by Sevilla at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in La Liga on Saturday, with all four goals coming in the first half.

Atletico came into Saturday's contest in fifth place, two points and two places behind Sevilla. Following an impressive 1-0 win over Liverpool, followed by another strong 3-1 win over Villarreal, the trip to Espanyol last time out was a chance to continue building momentum, but Diego Simeone's men were held to a tame 1-1 draw.

The clash between Atleti and Sevilla started evenly, with both sides creating early opportunities. Joao Felix sent Alvaro Morata through, but the Spaniard's shot was eventually blocked. At the other end, Suso fired in a fizzing effort, which forced Jan Oblak into a save.

However, with 19 minutes on the clock, the away side moved into the lead through Luuk de Jong. De Jong latched on to Joan Jordan's pass in the centre of the Atleti box before ruthlessly firing into the bottom corner. A very good finish, but poor defending from Stefan Savic.

Atleti responded well, and soon drew level. Felipe nodded down a header for Joao Felix inside the Sevilla area, but the Portugal international went down under pressure. After a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty for a handball in the build-up. Up stepped Alvaro Morata to bring his side level on 32 minutes.

And just four minutes later, the turnaround was complete as Joao Felix found the net after some good work by Koke. However, in a frantic few moments, the hosts were pegged back once again two minutes before half time. Kieran Trippier was adjudged to have fouled Lucas Ocampos, and the referee pointed to the spot. Ocampos was the man to take the spot-kick and he made no mistake.

The second half wasn't quite so frantic, but Atletico did have their opportunities to restore their lead. Substitute Yannick Carrasco twice came close, but he saw one effort well saved, while he wasted his second effort by firing over. Simeone's men continued to push for a winner as the half wore on, but they weren't able to find one.

Sevilla will be pleased with the point, considering the pressure they were put under, but Atletico will feel frustrated. The result means that the Madrid-based side remain in fifth place, level on points with fourth-placed Getafe.

Next up, Los Rojiblancos travel to Anfield for the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie with Liverpool. Simeone's men currently hold a slender lead from the first leg.
