Tottenham Granted Permission to Increase Stadium Capacity for the Second Time Since Opening

Tottenham Hotspur have officially increased the capacity of their stadium to 62,303 after being granted permission to do so in an application to Haringey Council.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was only opened in April of this year, but this is already the second time the club has added extra seats in that time.

On completion in the spring, the stadium held 62,062 fans. But a review during the summer resulted in just 150 seats being added. The latest increase sees just shy of 100 more.

Spurs confirmed the news in an official statement and explained that the increase in capacity will give more people the chance to buy a season ticket. The club will now contact those on the waiting list with the offer of a season ticket.

The capacity at the now demolished White Hart Lane stood at a little over 36,000 and was down at around 32,000 at the time of closing, meaning that Spurs have been able to open their doors to nearly twice the number of fans on a matchday.

That is a significant step forward, not least because of the additional revenue it brings. A new stadium is also a sign of an ambitious club and is therefore also a lure in the transfer market.

Since a regrettable 7-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in October, Spurs haven’t lost at home in any competition. The arrival of new head coacg Jose Mourinho has also seen the club win four of their last five Premier League games to rise into contention for a top four place.

The next game for Spurs will see Mourinho meet a former club when Chelsea make the short trip to visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Portuguese had a good record against Chelsea during his time as Manchester United boss, winning both times he faced them at home.

After that, Spurs face Brighton, Norwich and Southampton over the festive period, before an FA Cup third round tie against Championship strugglers Middlesbrough on 5 January.
