Man Utd to Make Renewed Christian Eriksen Approach Despite Pulling Plug in Summer
Manchester United have been tipped to renew their interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen, who is believed to have informed his current club that he is ready to leave in search of a new challenge.
Eriksen is out of contract at the end of this season and Spurs will have to sell the Denmark international in January in order to avoid losing him as a free agent in summer.
But where Spurs were holding out for £80m when United showed interest in Eriksen towards the end of the summer transfer window, it has been reported that the north London side will now consider offers under £40m when the January window soon opens.
With Eriksen thought to be admired by fellow Scandinavian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the squad at Old Trafford crying out for a ‘link midfielder’ to play between the lines, United initially showed brief but serious interest in the Spurs star in early August.
However, barely any sooner had the pursuit started, United pulled the plug. 90min informed you back then that the club were not happy with the situation. Despite receiving encouragement to bid from Tottenham, the Eriksen camp did not show particular interest in the switch at that time.
As a result, United opted to the end the talks instead of pushing ahead.
Now, however, the situation may have changed. No other offers for Eriksen were forthcoming, even though the European transfer window stayed open for several weeks longer.
While he was always thought to have favoured a move abroad, none of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus or Paris Saint-Germain put forward a proposal. Whether any will now that his price tag has been slashed, or that a free transfer is potentially just six months away, remains to be seen.
There was never the impression that Real Madrid were genuinely interested, while Juventus have invested heavily in big contracts for Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot in the last 12 months.
According to the Daily Mirror, United will try again for Eriksen and ‘hope to persuade’ the 27-year-old that a switch to Manchester is the right step for him to take.
The club will have to sell itself on the long-term vision and strategy that has been put in place this season, as well as hope that results have consistently improved enough by January to suggest that a return to the Champions League next season is likely.
As far as finances are concerned, United will be able to offer Eriksen a handsome deal that matches or trumps any other club in Europe, especially after big earners were cut from the wage bill during the summer. More are expected to follow by the end of this season.
