Barcelona Confirm Shock €50m Deal to Sign Andre Gomes From Valencia
By Chris Deeley
Barcelona left it late on Thursday night to confirm that a surprise agreement had been reached with La Liga rivals Valencia for the signing of Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes, for a fee believed to be in the region of €50m.
Juventus had been linked with a move for the 22-year-old as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba if the Frenchman moves to Manchester United this summer - with United themselves said to have been seriously considering a swoop earlier in the transfer window.
The Catalan club announced the deal in a statement on their website on Thursday evening, revealing that the play would officially sign the paperwork to become a Barca player at some point in the next week.
The club's short statement read: "FC Barcelona and Valencia CF have reached an agreement that will bring André Gomes to the Catalan capital. Gomes will formalise the deal and be officially presented as a new FC Barcelona player next week.
"The 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder thus becomes the fourth reinforcement for Barça ahead of the 2016/17 season following the additions of Galician midfielder Denis Suárez and French defenders Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne."
The talented Euro 2016 winner spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Valencia from Benfica, before the two clubs made the switch permanent last summer. Gomes scored eight goals in 78 appearances for the club over that time, and providing as many assists.
The Spanish champions have not released any further details of the deal, although it has been reported that the 22-year-old is set to commit his future to the Camp Nou for the next five years when he puts pen to paper next week.
