Peter Vermes laments 'bad management of the game' in SKC's 3-3 draw with Timbers

  • Sporting KC were 3-0 at halftime at home against Portland Timbers
  • The visitors scored three in the second half to take a point away from Children's Mercy Park
  • SKC have now failed to win back-to-back games in which they had a two-plus goal lead

Sporting Kansas City found themselves two goals ahead of Portland Timbers to start the second half, but Peter Vermes believes 'bad management' saw his side settle for a disappointing draw at Children's Mercy Park Sunday afternoon.

It was a similar story for Vermes and co last weekend as they were in the exact same situation a week ago at home against the new-look LA Galaxy. First-half goals from William Agada and Nemanja Rodaja saw the hosts take a 2-0 lead into the break, looking to secure all three points. But the exact opposite happened, as Marco Delgado scored the third and final goal of the game to propel LA to an improbable victory.

This time around, Agada bagged a first-half brace and Daniel Rosero added his own to give SKC a commanding 3-0 lead at the interval. But then, the dreaded second half saw the hosts concede three times -- with Evander, Felipe Mora and Kamal Miller all finding the back of the net to secure a dramatic point on the road.

If Sporting KC had managed to hold on for the three points, they would currently sit in third place in the Western Conference standings. But the dropped points means Vermes' team sunk down to seventh with 10 points from seven games played.

After the draw, Vermes explained that 'bad management' plagued his team -- in terms of the players not seeing out the result and doing things he didn't tell them to do.

"Bad management of the game. Simple. Just bad management. I'm not going to tell you what I told the guys at halftime," Vermes said. "But what I told them to do, we did the complete opposite which resulted in the ball being in our end most of the half or at least until they tied the game up except for the period getting to the penalty kick."

Vermes acknowledged that his team made a little progress as they managed to at least take a point away from the game instead of totally collapsing like they did against the Galaxy.

"Well, the good thing is we didn't lose. So we made a step in the right direction of tying but it’s still not good enough. Not with three goals. No chance. I said last time we were at home, 'You scored two goals. You have got to finish the game out at home.' And now we scored three at home. We scored three away and we closed the game out and we don't do it at home," he said.

Sporting KC now prepare to take on Inter Miami this Saturday at the 76,416 capacity Arrowhead Stadium -- instead of their usual ground at Children's Mercy Park that holds 18,467 -- with plenty of fans expected to flock to the home of the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs to see Lionel Messi come to town.
