In Arne Slot, Liverpool are getting a new manager who has played a transformational role in Feyenoord's recent success. That is according to one of the players who has seen his impact first-hand.

Liverpool have moved quickly in the past week to secure a deal for Slot, who has hasn't been shy in speaking publicly about the approach from Anfield prior to an official announcement.

Slot has made his name in Dutch football, impressing at AZ and then guiding Feyenoord to both Eredivisie and KNVB Cup glory since arriving in 2021.

Goalkeeper Justin Bijlow is one of the players who has seen Feyenoord before and after Slot, admitting losing the boss is a blow but not an opportunity the club can begrudge their soon to be ex-coach.

"It's a shame for our club. But just like with a player, you also give him a nice step because he has done so well,” Bijlow told the Dutch media after Feyenoord's Thursday night win.

"When the coach came, we had a completely different philosophy at the club. Playing football from behind was not our thing. The professionalism, and everything surrounding it, has improved a lot. The trainer played a large part in that."

The Eredivisie title that Slot delivered in 2023 was only Feyenoord's second Dutch triumph this century and a first in six years. He also took the club to their first major European final in 20 years in 2022, reaching the Europa Conference League showpiece against Roma.

Liverpool are believed to have agreed a compensation deal with Feyenoord worth up to €15m (£12.9m), which makes it a significant investment in the man chosen to replace Jurgen Klopp.

The structure at Anfield will be different next season, with Liverpool recruiting Michael Edwards to leading the sporting side of the club in a more senior role than he had during his first spell. Richard Hughes is also joining from Bournemouth as sporting director at the end of the season.
