Conor Gallagher has responded to scathing criticism fan from a young Chelsea fan, assuring that his side do 'put effort in' despite falling to a 5-0 defeat to Arsenal.

The Blues continued their poor campaign in the Premier League, with the Gunners netting five goals against them without reply at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Mauricio Pochettino's squad looked inexperienced among Mikel Arteta's men, prompting one young fan in the away end to hold up a sign that read, 'I don't want your shirt, I want you to want to fight for ours'.

Gallagher, who captained Chelsea on Tuesday and played the entirety of the game against Arsenal, was asked to address this fan's disappointment.

"We are definitely putting the effort in and I know how much it means to the boys," he said to TNT Sports. "I know it's been said many times – it's a very young squad with not much experience as a team in the Premier League.

"As you've seen this season we've had a lot of ups and a lot downs as well. We're still improving and working together as a team to try to get to that next level and today was one of those days where we were nowhere near it.

"It was nowhere near good enough and we will give everything we can to put it right in the next one. We started too slow. There were too many mistakes, it was too lethargic as a collective and we weren't at it. We have only got ourselves to look at and there is work to be done.

"We can't make any excuses or blame anything. We just have to look at ourselves as individuals and as a team."

The Blues now sit 19 points adrift of the top four, and are set to face fourth-place Aston Villa on Saturday.
