Disparaging referees may be a passion project for a large section of the planet's football fans, but being the official with the whistle is a tough old gig.

The world's elite command respect, keep calm in the face of overwhelming pressure and have a skin thicker than buffalo hide.

Here are the 25 best referees that world football currently has to offer.

Daniele Orsato takes no prisoners when it comes to officiating the big games and he's certainly not afraid to make the tough calls. The Italian does like to take a strict approach, dishing out plenty of cards, but he is usually fair in his distribution of decisions.

The 48-year-old was the referee for the 2019/20 Champions League final and also took charge of the 2022 World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Croatia.
